Most people I know use a jarred sauce when they make spaghetti, but little know how easy it is to make your own sauce which also allows you to control what is added. Many jarred (or canned) sauces have ingredients you can't pronounce and a lot of added sugar or high fructose corn syrup. You can easily impress your family (or just yourself) with this easy HOMEMADE recipe.
You can also use this same sauce to make Lasagna (another easy recipe I will share in a different blog).
Serves 4 (at least)
INGREDIENTS
1 can tomato sauce
1 can diced tomatoes
1 small can tomato paste
1 lb lean ground beef
1 small onion (or half med), diced
1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
1 teaspoon Garlic powder
1 teaspoon sugar
Salt & pepper
DIRECTIONS
In a heated 2 quart pot, add ground beef and diced onion. Add about 1/2 teaspoon of salt and 1/4 teaspoon of pepper. Cook ground beef, constantly "chopping" it up until it is crumbles. Drain off the fat (into a bowl so it doesn't clog your drain, discard), return the meat to the same pot.
Turn the pot onto low heat, add all of the remaining ingredients, stirring in the tomato paste until it is dissolved. Taste it! If it tastes very "tomatoey", add more salt. Add a little at a time more garlic and/or Italian seasoning to your liking. If you do not like garlic, do not add any at all. Let simmer for 15-20 min.
Serve on any type of cooked pasta or use to make Lasagna.
TIPS
- Add a half of a green bell pepper (diced) for a great flavor
- Add mushrooms if you like them
- Add a dash or two of ground red pepper (cayenne) for a hint of heat
- Add 1/2 lb of cooked, ground mild Italian sausage
- Leftovers can be frozen
